Bottom line
The sleeper story here is not the beat and raise, it's that eBay's organic engine is cooling underneath the Depop rollup: ex-M&A active buyer growth is 'over 1%' and eBay Live's once-precise '8x' growth multiplier has softened into vague 'triple digits' language. The obvious headline, 16% FXN GMV growth and a 12% EPS beat, is real, but the binding constraint is margin: take rate flipped from flat to negative, gross margin fell 100bps sequentially, and Q4 guidance explicitly bakes in slower operating income growth (6-10% vs. 11% actual). The line that should worry the desk most is the one they didn't say twice: last quarter's explicit promise that 'Depop is going to become accretive to consolidated non-GAAP operating income in 2028' vanished entirely from this call, the same call where management announced a 9% workforce reduction just weeks after calling their own conviction 'never stronger'. My view changes if next quarter's ex-M&A buyer growth reaccelerates above 2% and management explicitly reconfirms the Depop 2028 accretion timeline; if both stay silent, this starts looking like growth quality deteriorating under a beat-and-raise veneer.

The 30-second version

  • The buyer growth 'acceleration' is mostly a Depop rollup, and Live's precise multiplier just disappeared
  • Beat-and-raise on the surface, but take rate flipped negative and margin cushion is thinning
  • A 9% layoff landed the same quarter a concrete Depop profitability promise quietly vanished
