Bottom line
The sleeper story is the traditional server demand cliff that hit in weeks 10-12 across three business lines, signaling broader enterprise budget compression that Dell is disguising with AI euphoria. Yes, $12.1B in AI orders is impressive, but the backlog math doesn't add up and storage attach rates remain pathetic despite a year of 'AI devours data' promises. The real constraint isn't GPU supply or customer readiness, it's Dell's inability to monetize the broader AI infrastructure stack beyond the server box. Clarke's rare admission that 'I would not be truthful if I said we were satisfied with the attach today' is the most honest thing management said all call. My view changes if they can show measurable storage revenue per AI server and explain why traditional server demand fell off a cliff in March.

The 30-second version

  • Traditional server slowdown in weeks 10-12 is the canary in the coal mine
  • AI backlog math doesn't add up to the hype
  • Storage attach rates still pathetic despite the 'AI devours data' narrative
