Bottom line
The sleeper story is Chevron morphing into an infrastructure company with the Microsoft power deal proving they can generate contracted, commodity-agnostic returns that Wall Street doesn't know how to value yet. The obvious 'beat and raise' quarter masks that they've essentially given up on production growth despite $90 oil, choosing to harvest the Permian for cash rather than chase barrels. The binding constraint isn't geology or technology, it's management's decision to prioritize returns over growth, best captured by Mike's telling quote: 'we could grow these assets further, particularly in the Permian, if we chose but we are working for efficiency.' The real risk is CPC pipeline vulnerability, which could knock out $6B of annual distributions. My view changes if they announce a second power deal at similar returns, proving Kilby isn't a one-off.

The 30-second version

  • The real story: Power is becoming the new growth engine with 20-year Microsoft deal at 2.67 GW demonstrating repeatable model
  • TCO debottleneck delivered 60k bbl/d capacity increase to 320k, but CPC pipeline risk is the elephant in the room
  • Shale capital efficiency gains of 25% are masking a strategic shift: Chevron is done chasing Permian growth
