Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone's missing: CSX is building massive operational leverage while the market obsesses over weak demand. With $150M of one-time costs cycling out and 'well over 100 savings initiatives,' they're committing to 200-300 bps of margin expansion regardless of volume growth. The binding constraint isn't operational capacity-Mike Cory proved the railroad runs better than ever. It's pricing discipline in a low-growth environment. Steve Angel admits 'it will be slow going' on yield improvement, but if they can execute even modest pricing gains on top of the cost structure reset, the earnings leverage is enormous. Most revealing quote: 'We are assuming low single-digit revenue growth...we do not anticipate meaningful improvement in macroeconomic conditions.' Translation: they're building a recession-proof margin expansion story. My view changes if Howard Street fails to generate contracted volume commitments by Q2 or if the 100+ cost initiatives prove to be mostly one-time cuts rather than sustainable productivity gains.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper story: CSX is delivering massive hidden productivity gains while everyone focuses on weak demand
  • Management withdrew multi-year targets, signaling zero visibility despite improved operations
  • Howard Street Tunnel opens Q2 but pricing power remains the real constraint
