Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Coupang's $1.2B voucher program accidentally became the best stress test of their competitive moat - 80% of churned customers returned and resumed prior spending levels without splitting wallets, proving genuine switching costs exist. While everyone focuses on the obvious margin pressure and growth deceleration, the binding constraint is simply the mathematical reality that lost months of customer compounding can't be recovered even when underlying behavior normalizes. As Bom explained: 'Once a month is gone, you can't get it back... this year's revenue is now missing the months of compounding that didn't happen during that affected period.' Taiwan's 75% next-day coverage without variable cost increases suggests the infrastructure investments are working, but margin recovery depends entirely on demand catching up to pre-built capacity. My view changes if WOW member recovery stalls below 90% or if Q3 margins don't show sequential improvement despite guided recovery.

The 30-second version

  • SLEEPER STORY: Customer voucher program created accidental stress test of Coupang's moat
  • Data breach recovery is real but hidden by lost months of compounding
  • Taiwan hyper-growth creating margin pressure nobody's talking about
