Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Costco's membership golden goose is cracking: renewal rates falling 40bp with management now admitting it's permanent structural decline, not temporary volatility. Everyone will focus on the 8% sales growth and margin expansion, but the real story is they're spending heavily on wage increases and extended hours to chase membership upgrades while quietly redefining e-commerce metrics as growth decelerates. The binding constraint is membership quality deterioration as younger digital members renew at lower rates, forcing expensive retention tactics. As CFO Millerchip admitted: 'We would expect to continue to see a small decline in our renewal rate as this change gets fully reflected.' My view changes if renewal rates stabilize above 90% or if they can prove extended hours generate positive ROI after labor costs.

The 30-second version

  • The membership fee increase golden goose is showing cracks
  • Tariff mitigation story masks underlying gross margin pressure
  • They're quietly redefining e-commerce to hide deceleration
