Bottom line
The sleeper story is that wireless, the crown jewel of the convergence pitch, just decelerated from a record 448,000 net adds to 368,000, and management buried that in an annual-record reframe rather than addressing it head-on. The obvious headline, narrowing broadband/EBITDA declines, is real but fragile: it's propped up by a 70% free-to-paid conversion rate and a dropped YoY subscriber comparison that would have looked worse if disclosed consistently. The binding constraint right now isn't demand, it's execution bandwidth: a brand-new $1 billion-plus Q4 charge, a stalled Business Services segment, and a cost transformation management can't yet quantify beyond 'billions of dollars over time' and a vague promise of 'more context early next year'. The most revealing line of the call: management conceding broadband's AI vulnerability outright, questioning whether customers are getting the right value or could pay less for the service. My view changes if Q4 wireless net adds reaccelerate above 400,000 and the flagged FCF timing reversal doesn't fully materialize, that combination would tell us the deceleration is structural, not seasonal.

The 30-second version

  • Wireless net adds just decelerated for the first time in the convergence story, and management buried it in an annual framing
  • The 'narrowing declines' narrative is real but Business Services, the one segment they call a 'star,' is quietly decelerating too
  • Broadband subscriber losses lost their YoY comparison, and a new $1B+ Q4 charge just appeared out of nowhere
