Bottom line
The sleeper story is management quietly admitting their core product initiatives aren't working while disguising it as macro pressure. They promised Autoship improvements and better ad algorithms would drive H2 acceleration, now saying both were 'muted by the macro environment.' That's not macro, that's execution. The obvious headline is the revenue guide down, but they held EBITDA margins at 7.5% and maintained full-year profit guidance, choosing profitability over growth. The binding constraint is consumer discretionary attachment rates - customers are buying the basics but skipping the premium treats and add-ons that drive NSPAC. Singh's most revealing quote: 'We no longer believe it is prudent to embed a meaningful acceleration in consumer spending into our outlook' - they're throwing in the towel on their growth algorithm. My view changes if they can prove the Autoship product changes work once macro stabilizes, or if CVC customer acquisition stays above $900 NSPAC.

The 30-second version

  • THE SLEEPER STORY: They quietly downgraded their own product initiatives mid-quarter
  • Consumer softening hit late Q1, but CHWY maintains 7.5% EBITDA margins while adding 200k customers
  • Modern Animal acquisition masks underlying deceleration in their core clinic strategy
