Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the NIM 'expansion' everyone will write up tomorrow, it's that the non-interest income guide quietly got cut from a clearly reconciled roughly $2M blended run-rate last quarter to roughly $800K this quarter, with the core/oil-gas split that would let you isolate the real driver conveniently dropped. The obvious headline, solid NIM and a still-pristine credit book, is real but partly manufactured by a disclosed $1.1M non-accrual recovery to NIM and $1.7M to fees that management admits reverts to a lower normalized level. The binding constraint here isn't demand, Jason Estes was explicit that growth has 'slightly slowed down' off the robust 2025 pace; it's pricing discipline and a shrinking, intentionally de-risked energy book (8%, a 10-year low) that caps upside even with oil spiking on the Middle East conflict. The most revealing line of the call was Tom Travis's own framing: 'it's a little boring for some people quarter after quarter where we're always putting up these fantastic results', management's comfort with sameness is exactly why the quiet disclosure narrowing on fee income and the disappearance of last quarter's accounting-skepticism language deserve more scrutiny than the stock's reaction will suggest. My view changes if next quarter's 10-Q shows the core (ex-oil/gas) fee income run-rate actually held near $1M rather than falling toward the new $750-850K blended guide, and if the quoted NPA payoff closes on schedule without a replacement credit migrating in behind it.

The 30-second version

  • The fee income guide just got cut in half, and the breakdown that explained why disappeared
  • NIM 'expansion' headline is partly a one-time non-accrual recovery, not organic repricing
  • Loan growth deceleration is real and the 'clean credit book' story leans on one pending payoff

Loan growth outlook (full year)Tom: growth matching 2025's pace 'sounds like a stretch'Jason: 'moderate single digit,' 'slightly slowed down' vs Q3/Q4 2025 paceDeceleration confirmed
Core NIM guidance445bps 'a great starting point,' could dip toward historical low of 435bps on deep cuts440-445bps modeled rangeGuide held but pinned to low end
Deposit cost dynamics / betas'The last couple of cuts didn't really flow into deposit betas as strongly as maybe the first couple''I don't see a massive fluctuation or any meaningful fluctuation in deposit costs' absent a rate increaseBeta erosion from last quarter appears to be stabilizing
Capital ratio / capital buildCapital described as 'going to continue to pile up'15.96% risk-based capital ratio at quarter-end, 'probably over 16% today'Qualitative capital-build concern now quantified
Asset quality characterization'Asset quality that is probably better than it's ever been''Our credit book is as clean as it's ever been'Same superlative framing repeated, no new detail added
Loan payoff dynamics'I think we'll have $25 million a month of payoffs this year. So to grow... we need $35... $45 million a month of new funding.''In the second quarter in particular, we expect pretty sizable payoffs, and then we'll just offset that with new loan bookings throughout the rest of the year.'Elevated payoff expectations continue into Q2
Q2 non-interest expense guideQ4 actual used as 'solid guide': roughly $9.1M core plus $1M oil/gas$9.0M-$9.25MRoughly flat to prior quarter's core run-rate
Q2 non-interest income guideQ4 actual used as guide: roughly $1M core plus $1M oil/gas, about $2M total$750K-$850KGuide roughly halved vs. prior blended run-rate
Oil & gas wind-down timeline'Nothing burger'; gradual decline over 'the next three or four years' unless sold'Gone altogether or diminished quite a bit over the next few months'Timeline compressed from years to months
NPA level / credit migrationProvisioning not increased despite growth, asset quality 'probably better than it's ever been'Pro forma NPAs of $4-5 million (~25bps) pending Friday payoffStill favorable but now hinges on a single credit event
