Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the record $896 million loan quarter, it's that core margin has now compressed for two straight quarters while reserve coverage quietly thins (ACL down to 1.19% from 1.23%, zero provision taken) during the bank's biggest growth quarter ever. The binding constraint here isn't demand, pipelines are strong and C&I is up 11.1% YoY, it's funding and reserve discipline keeping pace with growth, not origination capacity. The tell: Stacy Kymes told an analyst the declining reserve ratio 'could continue to fall', and in the same call withdrew the one hard number (mortgage finance's $1B year-end target) he'd given the market just one quarter earlier, even though that business is beating plan. My view changes if Q3 shows core margin actually expand (not just the headline) and the ACL ratio stabilizes rather than continuing its slide; if it doesn't, this record growth quarter will look like it was funded by releasing reserves rather than earning its way there.

The 30-second version

  • The real margin story is hiding behind a 1bp headline beat
  • Record $896M loan quarter grabs the headline, but reserve coverage is quietly thinning into it
  • A specific target quietly became 'lots of headroom'
