Bottom line
The sleeper story is reserve coverage: allowance ratio fell to 1.23% from 1.28% in the same quarter management raised full-year loan growth guidance to near 10%, while capital ratios quietly drifted lower too. The obvious headline, steady execution with an in-line efficiency ratio of 63.2%, masks the first NIM compression quarter in over a year and an NII guide cut despite removing two assumed rate cuts from the model. The binding constraint right now is funding, not demand: a Q4 wholesale deposit trade unwound in Q1 and drove the deposit decline, and management itself conceded the Visa reinvestment playbook 'isn't as compelling this time'. My view changes if Q2 shows the allowance ratio stabilizing or rising alongside the accelerated loan growth, and if management re-engages on buyback plans that went completely unmentioned this quarter after dominating the Q4 call.

The 30-second version

  • Reserve coverage is quietly shrinking just as loan growth guidance gets raised
  • Margin 'expansion story' just posted its first margin compression quarter, and they papered over it with mix shift in guidance
  • Buybacks vanished from the call entirely, and Visa gain enthusiasm cooled
