Bottom line
The sleeper story is that BMS's 'growth portfolio' decelerated from +14% to +12% in the same quarter that Eliquis, a franchise already guided for a $1.5-2B step-down in 2027, accelerated to +26% growth, meaning an increasing share of this 'beat and raise' is coming from the asset everyone knows is about to fall off a cliff. The obvious headline, four positive Phase III readouts in two months plus a guidance raise, is real, but EPS still fell 34% sequentially to $1.35 on an unquantified gross margin charge and a conveniently lower tax rate. The binding constraint right now isn't the pipeline, it's disclosure discipline and BD execution: management dodged the admilparant secondary endpoint question outright ('We didn't disclose this') and gave a generic non-answer when pressed on why BD spend trails peers ('we continue to be very active in the space'). My view changes if the Q4 print shows the legacy/growth portfolio mix reversing back toward growth-portfolio leadership, if admilparant's full secondary endpoint data comes out clean, or if a sizable BD deal finally materializes to validate the 'top capital allocation priority' rhetoric.

The 30-second version

  • The 'growth portfolio' is quietly decelerating while the dying legacy franchise is doing the heavy lifting
  • Guidance raise headline masks a 34% sequential EPS decline and margin compression
  • The 120mg admilparant dose quietly missed, and they won't disclose the secondary endpoints that matter most
