Bottom line
The insurance rotation into private credit is the real story here, not retail flows, with $10B already signed and billions more in pipeline while everyone fixates on BDC redemptions that don't matter. The market sees $192B in headline flows but misses that low-fee institutional index is hemorrhaging ($41B outflows) while high-margin alternatives capture the rotation. The binding constraint is deployment pace in private markets, not fundraising, which explains why they're highlighting spread widening rather than AUM growth. 'If we can convert 5% or 10% of those assets, it adds a tremendous lift to our average net fees' reveals they're engineering margin expansion through mix shift, not operational leverage. My view changes if SpiderRock/Aperio AUM reappears and shows growth, or if institutional index outflows accelerate beyond $50B quarterly.

The 30-second version

  • The sleeper: Insurance rotation into private credit is accelerating at unprecedented scale while everyone obsesses over retail BDC redemptions
  • The obvious $192B inflow headline masks that institutional index saw $41B OUTFLOWS
  • Management stopped disclosing SpiderRock AUM after bragging about 'record flows' and quietly buried Securitize stake details
