Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the $1.2B AML charge, it's that BAC's operating leverage broke this quarter (expense +7% vs. revenue +3%) and management responded not with a reaffirmed FY guide but with a softer, lower bar: 'we expect to return to operating leverage in Q4'. The obvious headline, the settlement and the stock drop, is real but secondary; what should actually worry the desk is that the markets business' vaunted multi-year consistency streak quietly broke (S&T ex-DVA revenue -5% YoY) while management fuzzed the streak count to '18 or 17 quarters' rather than own it. The binding constraint right now isn't demand, loans grew for a 10th straight quarter and deposits are ample, it's expense discipline and regulatory overhang eating into the operating leverage story that's been BAC's core re-rating thesis since Investor Day. My view changes if Q4 shows adjusted expense growth falling back below revenue growth with a clean reaffirmed FY2027 operating leverage number, and if BAC finally discloses the core-banking-book NII growth rate it has now twice declined to break out.

The 30-second version

  • Operating leverage quietly broke this quarter and management buried the walkback
  • The $1.2B AML settlement is the headline, but the real story is markets cracking and a confidence vacuum
  • AI disclosure regressed from usage metrics to unverifiable savings math
