Bottom line
The sleeper story is China coal gasification quietly generating real cash flow as oil prices force customers back to coal, while everyone focuses on the helium drama. APD's cavern strategy is working exactly as designed, but their continued 4% EPS headwind guidance suggests either extreme conservatism or they expect Qatar supply back sooner than the market thinks. The binding constraint is construction cost certainty on Darrow - not CBAM, not Yara's appetite, just basic EPC economics in an inflationary environment. Eduardo's quote that 'base case is we do not move forward' on Darrow is refreshingly honest for a CEO. My view changes if helium pricing recovers faster than their guidance suggests or if that $1.5-2B electronics backlog doesn't materialize in six months.

The 30-second version

  • THE SLEEPER STORY: Coal gasification pivot in China driving massive unsung cash flow
  • Electronics backlog explosion: $1.5-2B more coming in 6 months, Samsung deal is 'largest ever'
  • Helium cavern strategy paying off but they're still cautious on pricing recovery
