Bottom line
The sleeper story isn't the 50% revenue beat, it's that free cash flow nearly halved sequentially to $1.6B while operating cash flow fell to $2.4B, even as management inflated the server CPU TAM by 83% in a single quarter and quietly dropped the specific >50% share target they gave investors just three months ago. The obvious headline, 107% data center growth and raised 2027 targets, is real, but the binding constraint isn't demand, it's AMD's own forecasting: Lisa Su conceded H1 server CPU supply was tight 'because much of this demand was unforecasted'. The most revealing moment of the call was Jean Hu's answer to a direct Instinct margin question: 'we'll give you more color when we get there to guide the 2027', a deferral on the one number that would actually validate the data center AI growth story. My view changes if next quarter's CFFO/FCF rebound sharply and management re-anchors a specific 2027 Instinct dollar figure instead of a percentage; until then, this is a strong quarter wrapped around a credibility gap on the metrics that matter most.

The 30-second version

  • Cash conversion quietly cracked under the headline beat
  • 107% data center growth is real, but the binding constraint is forecasting, not demand
  • The >50% server share target vanished and a specific dollar anchor got swapped for a vaguer percentage
