Bottom line
The sleeper story is margin, not revenue: the tariff refund cushion is nearly gone (vast majority received) at the exact moment memory costs are guided to keep rising and Siri AI cloud costs start hitting COGS for the first time, which is why gross margin guidance drops to 45-46% from an actual 47.9%. The obvious headline, a 12% revenue beat and a promised best quarter in company history for December, is real, but it's happening alongside operating cash flow quietly falling below net income, a reversal from last quarter, and a fresh $33B jump in manufacturing purchase obligations that nobody asked to see broken out. The binding constraint right now is not demand, it's memory supply and cost, plus the still-unquantified Siri AI compute cost curve, which Kevan Parekh himself calls very early days, hard to predict a full quarter after launch. Management's own words on China and the EU, present in detail last quarter, vanished entirely this quarter, a silence that speaks louder than the Duo hype. My view changes if the December quarter shows OCF re-converging with net income and management puts a real number on the Siri AI on-device/cloud query mix; until then, this is a margin-quality story the market is reading as a growth story.

The 30-second version

  • The margin cushion is running out right as the margin pressure peaks
  • Revenue beat is real, but operating cash flow just flipped below net income
  • Siri AI's China and EU rollout vanished from the conversation entirely
