Bottom line
The sleeper story everyone will miss: underlying organic growth was actually -5% globally once you strip out the $100M fiscal year accounting shift, and U.S. distributors destocked because end demand was weaker than Zoetis's sales into the channel. The obvious headline is competitive pressure in dermatology and parasiticides, but the real binding constraint is that competition is no longer expanding markets - it's pure share theft without the historical tailwind of category growth. Management admitted: 'Unlike prior competitive cycles, we do not currently have the benefit of underlying market expansion.' The most revealing quote came from CEO Peck acknowledging their vulnerability: 'As the market leader with significant share in premium products, we are at a point where our growth is less driven by new product cycles.' My view changes if they can prove Q2 distributor inventory restocking is real demand recovery rather than temporary channel dynamics, or if monthly Librela trends actually inflect positive rather than just 'stabilizing.'

The 30-second version

  • THE SLEEPER STORY: U.S. companion animal distributor destocking masked organic -5% decline despite flat reported growth
  • Premium pricing power evaporated: 'Price has played a larger role in the decision process' across key franchises
  • Guidance mathematically aggressive: Q1 flat performance somehow leads to 2-5% full-year growth
