Bottom line
The market will trade this as a clean beat-and-raise with record margins, and the Square GPV acceleration to 13% and Neighborhoods crossing $1 billion annualized GPV are genuinely strong. But the sleeper story is what went quiet: Borrow loss rate cohort percentages disappeared right as origination growth decelerated from 82% to 59%, and primary banking actives, last quarter's headline engagement metric, went unmentioned. The binding constraint isn't demand, it's credit-quality transparency and memory/hardware cost creep, which Thomas Templeton admitted the company 'can't say we'll never be impacted' by. Jack Dorsey's own words on Buzz monetization, 'we don't want to custom fit one too early without having a lot more information', tell you the AI monetization story is still pure narrative, not a binder. My view changes if next quarter's call restores specific Borrow cohort loss rates and primary banking actives disclosure; if those stay dark for a second straight quarter, that's a credit-quality tell worth shorting into.

The 30-second version

  • The Borrow loss-rate disclosure just quietly vanished
  • Beat-and-raise headline is real, but the engine is ISOs and one-time tailwinds, not organic reacceleration
  • Primary banking actives, a headline KPI last quarter, disappeared entirely this quarter
