Bottom line
The sleeper story is that LMT just negotiated the best margin structure in defense contractor history: keeping efficiency gains instead of giving them back via cost-plus repricing will drive 200+ bps of margin expansion nobody's modeling. The record backlog is impressive but execution issues on legacy platforms persist, with F-35 disclosure going opaque just as deliveries should be ramping. The binding constraint isn't demand or capacity, it's their ability to execute on 60-year-old platforms while scaling cutting-edge munitions. As Taiclet revealed: 'We get to keep in our own profitability.' My view changes if F-35 deliveries are actually declining, which the metric disappearance suggests.

The 30-second version

  • The real story: Munitions margins are about to get juicy with commercial-style contracts
  • Record $230B backlog looks great, but F-16 and C-130 delivery issues persist
  • They stopped disclosing specific F-35 delivery numbers and DSO metrics
