Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the 9% domestic retail print, it's that management just told us Q4 wholesale will outrun retail and dealer inventory will 'need to adjust' upward, softening the one-to-one alignment framing from Q2 that has been the entire foundation of the dealer-health turnaround thesis. The obvious headline is a beat-and-raise quarter with 37% US market share and accelerating retail, but EPS down 87% YoY to $0.40 and a tariff guide that blew through its own range by up to 60% tell a messier underlying story. The binding constraint right now isn't demand, it's credibility: management is asking us to trust an unreconciled tariff recovery offset and an unexplained drop in P&A/A&L YoY disclosure at the exact moment they're loosening the inventory discipline that rebuilt dealer trust. The tell is in Jonathan Root's own words: 'do expect that there will be a little bit of growth in what we're putting out from a dealer inventory standpoint', a direct softening from the 'largely one-to-one' framing. My view changes if Q4 actual dealer inventory data shows that 'little bit of growth' staying genuinely modest (sub-5%) rather than reinflating into the kind of oversupply that forced this turnaround plan in the first place.

The 30-second version

  • The 'disciplined wholesale' promise is already cracking
  • Beat-and-raise quarter, but EPS cratered 87% YoY and gross tariff costs blew through guidance by up to 60%
  • P&A and Apparel/Licensing quietly lost their YoY comparisons
