Bottom line
The sleeper story is that commercial auto is turning into Hartford's next reserve hole while management insists 9% pricing is enough despite admitting attorney involvement is spiking. The Street sees 18.7% ROE and celebrates, but that ROE is juiced by $110M of workers' comp releases that won't last forever and LP gains from asset sales. The binding constraint is that their core middle market franchise is getting competed away (CR deteriorated 400 bps!) while they hide behind small business strength. Most revealing quote: 'We saw some elevated large loss activity and these are lines that we want to be very cautious about' while simultaneously taking adverse development. My view changes if they can hold Middle & Large CR below 93% in Q3 without reserve releases.

The 30-second version

  • Commercial auto is becoming the silent killer: reserves jumped $26M while they're still taking 9%+ pricing
  • Small commercial pricing power held at 7% despite everyone panicking about the cycle
  • Employee benefits disability is deteriorating faster than they're admitting
