Bottom line
The sleeper story is not the obvious 2027 target cut Erica Najarian flagged on the call, it's that two previously headline disclosures (the Q4 efficiency ratio target and the CCAR stress-loss detail) were not repeated this quarter, the same quarter criticized assets reversed higher and management called that reversal 'relatively stable'. The obvious headline, competitive pressure forcing CRE/auto pullback, is real but understates the point: Steinour himself says the CRE wind-down is happening 'much faster than we would have projected', which is a credit discipline story dressed as a competitive one. The binding constraint right now is not loan demand, it's management's own risk appetite colliding with a repricing CRE book, with construction commitments already cut to ~8% and no stated floor. My view changes if Q4 shows criticized assets actually declining with segment detail and the efficiency ratio target reappears on the slide deck; until then, the pattern of disappearing metrics alongside confirmed target cuts looks like visibility deteriorating faster than the narrative admits.

The 30-second version

  • The efficiency ratio and CCAR disclosures quietly vanished the same quarter the 2027 targets got cut
  • The 'competitive environment' excuse is really an accelerating credit retreat, and management says so themselves
  • Criticized assets reversed higher the same quarter management called them 'stable'
