Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Fastenal achieved 11%+ productivity gains (3% headcount growth vs 14.7% sales growth) through AI and operational improvements, but management refuses to quantify the dollar impact or sustainability. Yes, revenue accelerated to 14.7% and June hit 20%, but Watts admitted June included 'one-off orders' that won't repeat. The binding constraint is structurally impaired pricing power: despite 'fighting and clawing,' they only recovered 10bps of the 50bps price/cost hole while gross margins remain under severe pressure. Most revealing quote: 'I would have felt a hell of a lot better about the quarter if our incremental margin would have been 24%' instead of the 21.5% delivered. My view changes if Q3 shows OCF/NI conversion back above 100% and price/cost improves another 20bps, proving this quarter's working capital issues were truly just June timing.

The 30-second version

  • Headcount growth at 3% while sales grow 15%: AI productivity gains are here but management won't quantify
  • June sales shocked management with 20% growth, but it's partly one-off orders
  • Gross margin 'bad trend' finally reversed but price/cost still 40bps negative
