Bottom line
The sleeper story is damages becoming the next shrink opportunity, with management explicitly calling 2026 'the time for damages to move at that quick rate' after shrink success. Everyone will focus on the obvious 4.3% comp beat, but the real driver is Value Valley's 17.6% comp showing Dollar General is winning the lowest-income customer with $1 price points while others struggle. The binding constraint is no longer operational execution (they've fixed that), but rather the pace at which they can scale Media Network and nonconsumable penetration without losing their core value positioning. Vasos revealed the strategy: 'Private brands, the $1 price point and a strong everyday low price. Those are the benchmarks for what our customer is looking for.' My view changes if damages improvement disappoints in the first half of 2026 or if digital delivery incrementality proves overstated when peer data becomes available.

The 30-second version

  • SLEEPER: Damages is the new shrink story, set to accelerate in 2026
  • Value Valley at $1 price point is the real traffic driver, not just general value
  • DG Media Network guidance quietly cut from prior expectations
