Bottom line
The sleeper story is that hardware systems are becoming a predictable subscription-like business with $1B+ run rates that Wall Street still models as lumpy upfront revenue. The obvious headline of strong Q3 results masks that $150M of the $600M backlog increase was China catch-up, not organic acceleration. The real binding constraint is manufacturing capacity for hardware systems where customers are essentially pre-ordering annual capacity allocations. Devgan's confidence is notable: 'I would be surprised if our IP business does not grow better than Cadence average' shows unusual specificity for normally cautious management. My view changes if operating cash flow conversion doesn't improve in Q4 or if the China normalization story breaks down.

The 30-second version

  • Hardware systems are becoming the real subscription business
  • IP business growth is real and structural, not cyclical
  • China restrictions created an artificial $150M bookings pop in Q3
