Bottom line
The sleeper story is that this quarter's guidance raise is substantially manufactured: strip out the $275M customer payment and EBITDA/AFFO guidance moves are unchanged from the prior quarter, while the deal itself yields only about $4M of annualized AFFO on a $275M outlay. The obvious headline, "resolved a longstanding customer issue, raised guidance," is real but thin cover for a leasing pipeline sliding to the bottom of its range and a services business where 600MHz deployment is admittedly "a little bit slower... than we anticipated". The binding constraint here isn't Crown Castle's execution, it's carrier capex timing on spectrum deployment, which CCI cannot control and has now missed its own expectations on twice. Most telling is what disappeared: the $3.5 billion DISH claim and $2.4 billion escrow, headline numbers in Q2, got reduced this quarter to a single vague line about mediation with zero dollar figures restated. My view changes if next quarter's 10-Q shows the $275M transaction's AFFO accretion tracking above the $4M stated, leverage declines back toward 6.3x, and management restates hard DISH claim figures rather than continuing to go dark on that topic.

The 30-second version

  • The guidance raise is mostly a $275M accounting transaction, not organic strength
  • Beat-and-raise headline masks a leasing pipeline sliding to the low end
  • The $3.5B DISH claim and $2.4B escrow, last quarter's headline legal story, vanished from this call
