Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the $4.7 billion Volta headline, it's that AI Cloud ARR growth has quietly stalled: last quarter's monthly cadence showed ARR hitting $69M by the April update, and this quarter's single data point of $76M at end of June implies barely 10% growth over two months, a fraction of the prior pace, dressed up as '+77% quarter-over-quarter'. The obvious headline, the TETL/Volta lease, is real progress, but the credit structure underwriting the entire $4.7B figure is still only 'anticipated,' not executed, and the tenant termination right at year 10 means the real economic duration is closer to 10 years than the touted 16-24. The binding constraint right now isn't demand, management says it themselves on Malaysia: 'the bottleneck right now is our execution', it's commissioning speed, credit finalization, and the capital stack needed to fund $500M of remaining TETL capex plus a newly raised $200-280M crypto infra capex bill. My view changes if the institutional-grade letter of credit for Volta gets named and rated next quarter, and if management restores monthly AI Cloud ARR disclosure, until then, the deceleration in the one metric they stopped giving us granularly is the thing I'd be most worried about.

The 30-second version

  • AI Cloud ARR growth quietly stalled out right as management flipped from monthly to quarterly disclosure
  • The $4.7B Volta lease headline is really a 10-year deal wearing a 16-24 year costume
  • Gross margin, the one number that actually tells you if mining economics are healing, went missing
