Bottom line
The sleeper story here isn't the record quarter, it's that the COO who spent an entire call last quarter building the AI-paradigm thesis is gone with no explanation, and the remaining team is now actively telling you LEAP 'is not specifically made for AI'. The obvious headline is another blowout (revenue +28% sequential, ATM gross margin through 30.6%, guidance raised again), but the binding constraint is no longer demand, it's space, and ASE is funding that space with debt that grew $100.2B in a single quarter. Joseph Tung's own words capture the trade-off perfectly: 'I think for next year, we will continue to see negative cash flow', even as CapEx guidance was hiked a third time to $11.5B. My view changes if next quarter brings (1) Dr. Wu back on the call with an explanation, (2) an actual operating cash flow figure instead of EBITDA-only disclosure, or (3) a real 2027 CapEx number that caps the debt trajectory.

The 30-second version

  • The COO who built the entire AI narrative just vanished from the call
  • Record quarter, record margins, but it's entirely debt-funded
  • Every ask for customer/product granularity still gets deferred
