Bottom line
The sleeper story is deceleration hiding behind record dollars: AUM growth slowed from 31%/40% to 25%/34% YoY and a headline liability-generation initiative, New Markets, disappeared from the call entirely after being pitched last quarter as scaling to half of Athene's new business. The obvious headline, record FRE/SRE and a marquee $35B Broadcom financing, is real, but the binding constraint is recognition timing, not demand: Broadcom's fees won't show up until Q4 2026 through Q3 2027, and $50B of signed deals sit outside this quarter's $74B origination number. Jim Zelter's own words capture the tension: the firm insists peers are wrong to think 'global industrial renaissance is AI and data centers', yet its own market-making business, the next leg of the transparency thesis, is explicitly pushed out to '28, 29, and 30' before it shows real revenue. My view changes if New Markets volume resurfaces with a number next quarter, AMAPS exposure at Athene is disclosed again specifically, or AAA's return closes the gap to the 11% long-term target it's currently missing.

The 30-second version

  • AUM growth is quietly decelerating even as 'record' FRE dollars grab the headline
  • Record ACS and origination numbers mask a deferred-revenue binder: the Broadcom fee stream isn't even in the book yet
  • New Markets, Apollo's touted 'up to half of new business' liability engine, vanished from the call entirely
