Bottom line
The sleeper story is that Amkor's two signature growth engines, compute and gross margin, both missed their own prior guidance this quarter, and management quietly stopped disclosing the metrics (utilization %, 2.5D/HDFO customer counts, advanced/mainstream mix) that would let us verify whether this is noise or a trend. The obvious headline is 'record revenue, record margins, record computing and auto', but the binding constraint is execution, not demand: management explicitly said the compute shortfall was about 'whip loading' through a 300-step process, not supply or customer pull, which means 2027 ramp assumptions now hinge on internal operational throughput they've already missed once. The most revealing line of the call was management's admission that long-term CapEx intensity guidance 'we have not provided that level of detail', right as CapEx is about to step up again into 2027-2029 Arizona peak spending. My view changes if Q4 compute growth hits the guided '>50% YoY' and gross margin actually expands into the 18-19% range as guided; a second consecutive miss on either would confirm the deceleration is structural, not a one-quarter whip-loading hiccup.

The 30-second version

  • The 'record revenue' quarter quietly missed its own compute and margin guides
  • Headline: record computing and auto revenue, margin expansion. Reality: the Street's favorite margin story just lost momentum
  • Three disclosure metrics vanished exactly when the narrative needed them most
