Bottom line
AGNC's Q3 dividend came with a much larger book-value decline: economic return was -12.7%. Non-GAAP net spread and dollar roll income of $0.37 covered the $0.36 declared dividend by one cent, but excludes important investment and hedge effects. Wider spreads may improve new investment economics while hurting existing holdings. The next test is whether deployment, hedging and market performance translate into better total returns without excessive leverage or liquidity risk.

The 30-second version

  • The dividend did not offset the book-value loss
  • Income coverage narrowed, but this is not a complete return measure
  • Higher prospective returns come with risk, not a contradiction
