Upstart Holdings (UPST) Q2'25 Earnings Call

The sleeper story is that Upstart's balance sheet is becoming their binding constraint just as newer products hit scale inflection points - they need $1.02B in loans funded by year-end or growth stalls. While everyone celebrates the 102% revenue growth and early GAAP profitability, the real risk is execution on third-party funding deals. Dave admitted 'deal timing is always hard to predict' for the end-2025 transition timeline. Most revealing quote: they stopped disclosing fully automated percentages and super-prime mix after highlighting them for quarters - classic denominator games when metrics deteriorate. The Model 22 breakthrough is real (24% conversion rates vs 19%) but capital availability, not AI capabilities, will determine growth trajectory. My view changes if they announce a major secured product funding partnership with specific committed capital in Q3.
