The real story is SoFi's stablecoin empire - being the first national bank with Fed-backed reserves gives them zero-risk economics that no other stablecoin can match, potentially bigger than their lending business. Management's 'game changer' positioning at 'center of crypto ecosystem' isn't hyperbole if they execute. However, their cash cow lending business is seeing margin compression as they shift more originations to lower-return LTV partnerships, and they've stopped reporting growth rates on key cross-sell metrics. Anthony Noto's most telling quote: 'We have phenomenal optionality today... choosing between 2 great options' - but that optionality masks the reality that their highest-return business (balance sheet lending) is being cannibalized by lower-return fee income. My view changes if SoFi USD generates meaningful partnership revenue within 2 quarters or if they restart balance sheet growth acceleration.
The 30-second version
- SoFi is building the first national bank stablecoin empire while everyone's distracted by lending
- Revenue growth masking concerning margin compression in their cash cow lending segment
- They stopped reporting key cross-sell metrics and pivoted to absolute numbers when rates would look bad
