The sleeper story is software licensing revenue already running at $1B+ annual pace through VW alone, with mid-30% margins that dwarf automotive economics. The obvious R2 launch headline matters, but the real business model is becoming technology licensing to OEMs who can't build software platforms themselves. The binding constraint isn't demand or production capacity, it's Rivian's ability to prove the platform works beyond VW before other OEMs build their own solutions. RJ's most revealing quote: 'Every manufacturer has to decide whether to develop it themselves, secure it from a third source...or accept that without technology, you will lose market share.' My view changes if they announce a second major OEM licensing deal in 2026.
The 30-second version
- Software & services is the real business, automotive is just the data collection mechanism
- R2 launch looks smooth but they've engineered away the upside optionality
- The model is shifting from vehicle sales to technology licensing, but they won't quantify the TAM
