The sleeper story is QS creating a new metric to sidestep revenue recognition problems - customer billings admits it's 'not a substitute for revenue under US GAAP' and can 'diverge from future cash inflows.' While the Ducati demo provides good theater, VW's timeline hasn't accelerated despite all the progress claims. The binding constraint remains revenue recognition challenges that forced them to invent a new metric rather than book real revenue. As Siva noted: 'we are beginning to show returns from our capital-light development and licensing business model' - but returns that can't be recognized as revenue aren't really returns. My view changes if they start recognizing any portion of customer billings as GAAP revenue or provide specific field testing timelines with measurable milestones.
The 30-second version
- Customer billings is the new vanity metric to hide lack of real revenue
- VW timeline pushed to 2029 despite all the progress theater
- COBRA process gains are real but they're burning cash faster to show progress
